Select Your Japanese Themed Centerpiece
First, shop your house. Do you have a Buddha like mine? I tried really hard to make my table reflect JAPAN and not other Asian countries but it's hard as there is some overlap.
No Buddha? No problem. You'll need to be flexible and use your imagination a bit.
Do you have any ninja toys? Bamboo? A small Japanese flag you can hang? A cool sushi making set? Cherry blossoms {faux or real}? Koi Fish art? There are so many motifs you can borrow.
Hang Japanese Paper Cranes
Origami paper cranes are a big part of Japanese celebratory culture and a wonderful activity if you want to make learning about Japan fun for kids.
We made a dozen to hang from our dining table chandelier. If you don't have a hanging light, you can tie the origami cranes to an embroidery hoop and hang that over your table.
Japanese Place Settings
It's pretty easy to find Japanese themed napkins but not paper plates. But I'm loving how well these palm leaf plates pair with a simple floral dessert plate. And the mini suitcase will accompany all of our travel inspired tablescapes as we explore kids around the world!
You can find all the items plus a few more ideas in my Amazon Idea Store.
- Palm plates
- Geisha napkins
- Wooden reusable chopsticks
- Kids helper chopsticks {not shown but SUPER helpful!}
- Floral dessert plate
- Mini suitcase favor box
Add the Japanese Flag
When representing a country you must use their flag and a table runner seemed an easy way to bring it in. Just print out the flag on letter sized paper and tape them together. Lay down the center of the table and arrange your centerpiece on top.
Add Final Japan Fun Details
The vases of bamboo are a perfect way to frame out the Buddha statue with a few extra paper cranes. I purchased this curly bamboo at IKEA for our Party Like A Panda Birthday and they are still going strong!
I used the salt and paper grinders to anchor the ends of the runner. And even though they really don't have anything to do with Japan, they look great with the palm plates.
See what you've got. Create a few new things together and make learning about Japan FUN for kids! If you create a Japanese inspired table I'd love to see!

Up next….Week 5: SCIENCE
My dad knew how to fold a paper crane. I remember being amazed as a kid! Very pretty party!
We had tons of fun. Actually my daughter is still making them and hanging them from her ceiling. It’s SO pretty. I was impressed by my kiddos (7) and (10) ability to make them.
I love Japan, one of my favorite countries. This is very cool!
I’m so glad. I’m very excited to go visit some day and it’s been really fun doing some research and making notes about places to visit and things to do.
