Tropical End of Year Teacher Gift Idea
We all know it’s coming. The last day of school is circled with a red sharpie on the calendar every year. But somehow it always sneaks up on me. What to get for these amazing teachers who have made such an incredible impact on my child’s life? I wish I could say that good ideas just come to me in my sleep, but I can’t count on that. So I usually just have it on my brain the last week or two of school and pray for some inspiration. During a recent trip to JoAnn’s I spied their pineapple reusable bags {on sale} and my end of year teacher gift idea was born!
Summer isn’t just a time of year, it’s an idea; rest, relaxation, vacation, BBQ’s. You get the idea. For some teachers that can take the time off, this is actually true. For the rest of us that work through the summer months, we sort of live through them! If I could have my way I would spend most of my time on a beach in Hawaii. Wouldn’t most people? Pineapples speak to me of tropical sun and promises of future relaxation, which is probably why they are so hot right now! You can’t relax in the summer sun without sunscreen so we had to add that in. And it’s not long in the heat before you need hydration so a beverage rounds out our gift bag.

What's in the bag?
I have two very different kinds of teachers this year. My daughter’s teacher is a little older, health conscious, and a little crunchy, which I loved. My son’s teacher is young, strict, and hip, which I also loved. Because I wanted a great end of the year gift for both teachers, I used the same idea and tweaked it with an educated guess for each.
Here's the recipe for our perfect end of year Teacher Gift:
- Pineapple
- ($3-5) Even if you don’t like eating them {but most people do} a pineapple makes a beautiful centerpiece.
- Sunscreen
- Health-nut: Aveeno Active Natural sunscreen: ($8) With moisturizers and less of the nasty stuff it’s great for people who are concerned about their health and the intake of unnecessary chemicals.
- Millenial: Hawaiian Tropic Sheer Touch: ($7 as an add-on) The iconic smell of sunscreen that transports me back to my teenage years where worries of fine lines, age spots, and skin cancer were decades away. The coconut scent is so reminiscent of summer that retailers use it to sell swimsuits in the winter!
- Beverage
- Health-nut: Fiji Water (Pack of 6 for $7) For a teacher whose favorite drink is water…you get her nice water. Fiji is hands-down my favorite water. Think all bottled water is the same? Do a side-by-side comparison with Arrowhead and Fiji…there’s no contest.
- Millenial: Calypso Lemonade: ($2-3) A taste of the islands, I love this lemonade but it comes in a glass bottle and is quite expensive to order online. A good substitute is Hubert's Lemonade ($21 for 6). Also in glass but much less expensive! Some piña colada mix and tiny umbrellas would also work here depending on the likes of your teacher.
- Reusable pineapple bag
- This particular bag is from JoAnn’s ($1.50) but any reusable bag would work. I don’t recommend paper gift bags as the items get heavy when it’s fully loaded. If you can't find a bag with a pineapple, grab a canvas bag and stencil your own!
- Natural Jute Ribbon
- I love this wired burlap ribbon ($7). I got this 10 yard roll at Amazon for a great price. I used double stick tape to attach it in a “red ribbon” fashion then tucked and fastened the ends.
- Ready-Made bow: IKEA
- Did you know IKEA has some pretty cool gift wrap and party options for great prices? But they come and go so the bow I used isn't available online anymore. I don't do much with licensed characters so the IKEA designs are the perfect combination of non-licensed modern themes with fun appeal.
- FREE Printable Pineapple tag
- I finished it off with a pineapple quote thank you tag. Because I love you, I’m going to let you have it as a FREE download for your next end of year teacher gift, or coach, or dance instructor, or anyone that’s been a sweet example to your child this year.
There are so many great tropical ideas that you can include in the bag. I chose a couple I liked and ran with it. Feel free to adjust to the preferences of your teacher.
Teacher Gift Finishing Touch: FREE Printable Tag
Pineapples are the star of this show so this quote is perfect:
Print it out on white cardstock, cut into 2″x4″ tags, use a mini hole-punch, and tie with rough jute or bakers twine. Top the bag with some tissue paper and send your child to their last day of school knowing that the teacher will definitely appreciate your gratitude in the form of a pineapple.
What are your favorite end of year teacher gifts? I’d love to have you share because I’m going to need another one next year! Happy Summer!!
Until next time,
