Santa's Magic Key Christmas tradition

What is Santa's Magic Key?

For children who live in homes without a chimney the subject of Santa can cause great distress. Santa's key is the solution to this architectural dilemma by providing magic means for Santa to open your door on Christmas Eve.

Children in apartments, condos, townhouses, trailers, and tents can breathe a sigh of relief knowing they won't be passed up by the Man in Red.

How to Make Santa's Key

If you can find a reproduction skeleton key, they are beautiful in themselves. So if you're pressed on time, or materials are scarce, feel free to tie on a tag and gift away.

But Christmas is a time of magic, so let's create a beautiful tassel keychain worthy of Santa!

Magic Key Tassel Keychain

Steps to create a tassel chain for Santa's magic key

Step 1. Wrap String Around Book

First, wrap your yarn around a hard cover book 20-30 times. Choose a book the finished length you are looking for.  This book is 5″ wide for a 6-1/2″ long tassel

Step 2. Add Ribbon Twine and Tie

Next, add different ribbons and textured yarn to add dimension and interest to your tassel. I wrapped my ribbons 2-4 times depending on their thickness and pattern.

The more pattern the less you need. However, you can increase the number of loops for the eyelash yarn and silver baker's twine because they are subtle.

Then, use the side opposite the book binding, where the cut ends of the pages are. The edges of the cover creates a small gap large enough to thread a length of yarn under and through. Now tie it off tightly in the center. Leave these tails as they will tie onto your key.

Step 3. Trim Bottom

Next, slide the yarn off the book and cut the bottom loops. Now trim the bottom of each ribbon into a nice angle so they all look finished.

Step 4. Tie Tassel Top

Finally, comb the yarn and ribbon with your fingers to straighten and tie with baker's twine 1-1/2″ from the top to create the tassel knob.

Congrats! Your magic tassel keychain is complete.
