What Does Cinco de Mayo Celebrate
Cinco de Mayo is ironically more of an American holiday that celebrates Mexican culture. The fifth of May is a holiday commemorating an unlikely victory of the Mexican army over France at the Battle of Puebla in the Franco-Mexican War in 1862.
But before I lull you to sleep with a history lesson, you can join the irony that while for most Mexicans it's just another day, Americans have adopted it as a widespread celebration! What can we say? Cinco de Mayo has now become synonymous with Mexican culture here in the United States, most widely celebrated in areas with a large Mexican-American populations like Los Angeles, Chicago, and Houston.
Cinco de Mayo is often confused for Mexican Independence Day, but it's not. September 16 is the real celebration of Mexicos independence from Spain. So while you may toast with tacos on May 5th, make sure you wish your Mexican brothers and sisters a Happy Independence Day in September.
