Easy Irish Soda Bread

Crusty and delicious traditional sweet soda bread

  • Large bowl
  • Wooden spoon


  • 4 cups All-purpose Flour
  • 4 Tb White sugar
  • 1 tsp Baking Soda
  • 1 Tb Baking Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1/2 cup Butter softened
  • 1 Egg
  • 1 cup Buttermilk

For Basting

  • 2 Tb Butter melted
  • 2 Tb Buttermilk
  • 2 Tb Brown sugar for topping


  • Preheat oven to 375°
  • Mix together dry ingredients in a large bowl
  • Add in the softened butter and used hands to fully incorporate
  • Stir in egg and buttermilk, dough will be like thick cake batter, slightly lumpy
  • Place dough on floured surface and knead lightly
  • Form into dome and place on sprayed baking pan
  • Mix together remaining buttermilk and melted butter
  • Slice top into an X and brush with basting mixture, then sprinkle with sugar
  • Place in oven and bake. Basting every 15 minutes and sprinkling with additional sugar if desired
  • Because ovens vary, check at 30 minutes with toothpick. Place back into oven for additional time unless toothpick comes out clean.
  • Serve immediately with butter and a bowl of stew!


Buttermilk substitute: add 1 Tb lemon juice or white vinegar to 1 cup milk and allow to sit for 5 minutes
