Our Small World Gets Big: Party Trend #4
Every year we look ahead to what is new. This year, I broke down the four top party trends for 2017. Several existing trends are being built on and continue into the New Year, while a few old ideas are making a comeback with updated appeal. We also see a few classic themes re-imagined with fresh new graphic appeal. Today's trend takes a look as our “Small World” gets big attention.
- Trend 1: Nature continues its allure
- Trend 2: Pattern creates a stunning “no theme” design
- Trend 3: Color sets the stage for fabulous fun
- Trend 4: Our small world gets big
Party Trend 4: Our Small World gets big
In a time where information travels at the speed of light our world can feel very small. In the United States we are a melting pot of ideas and traditions. During this current political climate cultural themes are brought to the forefront. Exotic designs from India, simple tropical décor, and vintage travel are “Small World” party inspirations that are going to get even bigger in 2017.
East Indian Bohemian Party Theme: Move over tribal, this boho theme has an eclectic, East Indian vibe. Boho tribal themes with arrows, feathers, and Aztec patterns are lovely. But they're stepping down as this East Indian Boho incorporates brighter colors, dramatic patterns, and exotic décor. The bohemian style of mixing vintage, re-purposed, and new takes a twist with this relaxed yet very chic party design. {I think the elephants just might be my favorite detail.}
*Please note: not all of these details are strictly East Indian. This theme incorporates pieces from Moroccan and Middle Eastern cultures as well. But an “East Indian, Moroccan, Middle Eastern Party” is too hard to say and we HAVE to call it something!
I love the juxtaposition of soft goods in nature. Toss a few rugs, pillows, and lampshades outdoors and it's an automatic party. This look from Dezignup is quite sophisticated as a baby shower, bridal shower, or wedding reception. But would also work well for a teen birthday or graduation party.
Love the peacock feathers in this centerpiece, elephant place card holders, and peacock motif napkins. {Have I mentioned that the peacock is most likely my spirit animal?}
How do we create this look? Soft goods. Lots of soft goods: rugs, pillows, poufs, and curtains in jewel tones. Finish it off with details like colored glass, gold screens, bright flowers, and Moroccan lanterns.
Henna tattoos would be a great activity at your next East Indian Boho party. Try your hand at some henna cookies to practice your designs and have something yummy to eat while you get your tattoo.

Tropical Party Theme: With Moana on the forefront it seems kids are interested in the Polynesian culture more than ever. Tropical party themes give the rest of us a chance to enjoy the sunshine, even for a day. Everything from flamingos and Luaus to pineapples and beach parties. The islands are always hot.
This Flamingo Party is a great theme for a summer birthday.
Make your own Tiki Torches with this DIY tutorial for your next luau.
The sea turtle is such an incredibly beautiful animal. And it makes for a pretty awesome fruit bowl! This is a great addition to the menu for an Under the Sea party, Surf party, or Luau.
Ice cream served in a pineapple? Um, yes please! The perfect way to cool off for a tropical themed summer birthday.
Sweet little pineapple cake for this tropical party.
Ready for a cold drink? These wonderful little milk bottles are dressed with a tropical DIY stir stick.

Vintage Travel Party Theme: I love to travel and explore new cultures. There is an excitement I don’t feel anywhere else when I dig out my suitcase and passport. With all of the things going on in the world today, it can sometimes feel like a scary place. I say, keep calm, and travel on. When you can’t actually get away, a travel party might be just the thing to lift your spirits.
Where will your party take you?
Maps, globes, and vintage luggage are must haves for this vintage travel party theme. I love the subtle airplane backdrop for this dessert table.
And how amazing is this travel inspired cake?
I also like opening up the theme to other modes of transportation. Planes, trains, and cruise ships are great places to start. This Up, Up, and Away party uses hot air balloons and airplanes accented with a large map backdrop and cloud cookies.
This Air Mail printables set from I Heart to Party allows you to go through customs in style. I love the postcard invitations, “duty-free” favors {for the appropriate guest list of course}, and vintage scale.

Phew! Now that we’ve finished our Four Top Party Trends for 2017, what do you think? Just watch and see if Small World gets big attention this year. Are there any themes that spoke to you? Which ended up being your favorite? If you’re not sure, you can check back on the others to see what you missed:
- Trend 1: Nature continues its allure
- Trend 2: Pattern creates a stunning “no theme” design
- Trend 3: Color sets the stage for fabulous fun
I personally found something in each trend that resonated with me. From nature it’s a combination of woodland and fairy garden. From pattern I can’t get enough of the hex designs. From color I’m in love with the cheery brightness of the rainbow. And finally in our cultural trend, the East Indian Boho has a place in my heart. Although, as a certified wanderer, I am also drawn to the travel party. {I would sleep with my passport if my husband wouldn’t think me crazy!}
Take a look and drop me a comment if you see something you like. What will you next party theme be?
Until next time,
