Mermaid Birthday Party Activity Station #1: Nails
Mermaid nails are the perfect spa birthday party activity idea! If you have gel polish and a few UV nail lights this station will go a lot faster. But if you're doing it the old fashioned way just make sure your guests start out with this one so they have time to dry before moving on to the next activities. But don't worry, the next station is face masks so there's more relaxing time to dry.
Buy enough regular nail polish for each guest to take one home if you'd like to treat it as a party favor. And provide the tools to remove any leftover polish guests might have.
Nail Polish Station Supplies:
- Mermaid nail polish station sign
- Nail files
- Base coat enamel polish
- 20 Color Gel Polish Kit with UV nail lights OR Regular fingernail enamel set
- Mermaid nail decals
- Top coat enamel polish
- Hand cream – mermaid related is ideal!
- Nail polish remover
- Cotton pads
Mermaid themed nail decals are such a fun addition to the nail station. Just make sure you go over the top of the decals with the top coat. Young guests will need help with this station but keep an eye on older ones as well – just to make sure lids get screwed back on and nothing gets spilled. Especially nail polish remover. Spilled nail polish remover will take the finish off your wood barstools by-the-way.
Mermaid Party Activity Station #2: Mud Masks
Treat this as a relaxation station since there's not much happening but sitting and waiting for your masks to dry. Supply washcloths, cucumber slices, and sheet masks while you play relaxing music
I got a few peel off masks but my daughter hated it – they hurt like heck when you peel it off. So stick with the sheet masks or a mud mask if desired. The mud masks require a sink and washcloths to remove. Sheet masks are easiest and cleanest for a crowd, even though they'll be big for little faces – it actually makes for pretty hilarious photos!
This is also a great station to provide lemon cucumber “spa” water with straws for the ladies to sip as they relax. Straws are necessary for navigating the masks.
Relaxation (Mud Mask) Station Supplies:
- Mermaid Relaxation Station Sign 8×10
- Washcloths
- Mermaid Sheet masks
- OR Dead Sea Mud Mask
- Sliced cucumbers
- Spa music – try a Spotify or Apple Music “Spa” playlist
- Mermaid Spa straws
Mermaid Birthday Party Activities Station #3: Make Up
You can make the mermaid make up as simple or intricate as you'd like. We used fishnet stockings to create a scale pattern on the girls faces that turned out pretty cool. I didn't get a video and will need to recreate it for you so you can see how fun it is! But it goes something like this:
- Place new, clean fishnet stockings over guests head. Anyone claustrophobic can just hold the waistband portion over their cheek or forehead.
- Using a makeup sponges dab on cream eyeshadow or stage makeup in the desired colors next to eyes, on side of forehead, or cheek. Layer colors and create a gradient effect.
- Add face glitter as desired to edges of scale pattern, or skip scales and just add glitter to a thin layer of Aquaphor! The Aquaphor stick is awesome for this! Way less mess and super easy to use.
- Apply setting powder or spray with makeup fixative. Once dry, remove net stockings.
- Add additional stick on gems or temporary tattoos as desired.
Cut temporary tattoos ahead of the party so selecting a design is easy for guests. No scissors needed during the party. And make sure to tell each guest how many tattoos they can have if you have a limited number.
Mermaid Makeup Station Supplies:
- Mermaid Makeup Station Sign 8×10
- Fishnet stockings
- Costume stage makeup
- Makeup sponges
- Cream Makeup setting powder
- Powder Puff
- Face glitter
- Aquaphor stick
- Rhinestone stickers
- Sea themed temporary tattoo bracelets
- Mermaid temporary tattoos
Mermaid Party Activity Station #4: Sugar Scrub
This activity is also a favor guests can take home when the party's over. Print up a Sugar Scrub Station Sign with the recipe and ingredients. Because little mermaids are mixing this on their own, this WILL get messy. Make sure you've got a disposable table cover for easy clean up.
I also created little “stations” for each guest with an empty 8oz clear plastic jar on a mermaid scale napkin and 7″ craft stick to begin.
Your “Pearl Sugar Scrub” is named thus for the shiny mica finish that makes it look like ground pearls. Do not be confused by the large chunks of pearl sugar used to make Belgian liege waffles. They will not do well in this sugar scrub!
But offering other colors of mica powders as well as several essential oil scents allows each guest to customize their sugar scrub for a fun in the tub or shower later.
Provide the ingredients in labeled containers so guests can easily follow the recipe without much adult supervision. We used 1/4 cup measures as they were easier to pour into the jars. Provide 2 measuring cups for the dry sugar, 2 measuring cups for the coconut oil, and two 1/2 teaspoons for the mica powders so several guests can create their recipe at the same time. If more than 5 people are at a station, increase the number of measuring items based on your guestlist.
Sugar Scrub Directions
- First, add your regular granulated sugar to the 8oz clear plastic jar.
- Then, add liquid coconut* oil. Melt the coconut oil before starting activity if necessary. Place oil container on a candle warmer in colder weather to keep soft through the whole event. {Side note: I love using candle warmers to keep caramel and melted chocolate soft during events as well}
- Sprinkle on your desired color of mica powders**
- Add drops of your favorite essential oil scent. We love: sweet orange, lavender, or mint for the bath.
- Use a 7″ craft stick to mix it all up. If you do a few batches of certain colors you could also pour sugar scrub in layers of color for your containers. But this will take a little more coordination.
- **NOTE: If a marbled appearance is desired, stir sugar and oil thoroughly before adding color. Then add your colors and stir carefully, cautious not to overmix.
*Allergy warning: If there's a tree nut allergy on your guest list please use an alternative skin softening oil such as Apricot kernel oil, Jojoba oil, or Avocado oil.
Mermaid Sugar Scrub Recipe:
- scant 1/2 cup sugar
- scant 1/2 cup oil
- 10 drops essential oil of choice
- 1 tsp mica powder
Mix all together in an 8oz container. The ingredient quantities will depend on the size of your jar, so cut the recipe in half for a 4oz container.
Then, send your little mermaids off with a beautiful jar of magical shimmery pearl scrub they can be proud of!
Mermaid Makeup Station Supplies:
- Sugar Scrub Station Sign 8×10
- Granulated sugar {regular sugar, extra fine, or unrefined all work great}
- Coconut oil {or alternative oils like Apricot kernel oil, Jojoba oil, or Avocado oil}
- Candle warmer
- Mica powders
- Essential oil scents like sweet orange, lavender, or mint
- 8oz Clear plastic jars with screw lids {or 4oz jars if guest list is large}
- Sugar Scrub jar top labels {Coming to the SHOP soon!}
- 7″ Craft sticks for stirring
Mermaid Birthday Party Activities Station #5: Photo Booth
Make sure everyone has their party gear from the favor table – headbands, pearl necklaces, mermaid slippers and completed their visit to the mermaid makeup station. Once finished, guests are ready for the final event….a mermaid photo shoot! What mermaid birthday party activity suggestion would be complete without it!?
Your mermaid photo backdrop doesn't have to be complicated. A simple fishing net on the wall with water ripple patterned fabric for the floor, and floating seaweed strands are the perfect cost effective decor. Throw in a few accessories like aqua blue lanterns, and “anemone” flowers, and a stuffed marine animal, or two!
In addition to the party favors (headbands, and pearls) you'll want to provide a couple of mermaid tails and a shell bra for posing!
And finally, a couple of mermaid dolls for the girls to love during their pictures.
Mermaid Photo Booth Station Supplies:
- Fishing net
- Large Plush Shark, Stuffed dolphin or Beluga whale
- DIY Seaweed
- Water ripple patterned fabric (2 yards)
- Aqua lanterns – similar
- “Anemone” flowers – Dollar Tree gift wrap “bows”
- Mermaid costume tail, another style of mermaid tail but it runs small
- Mermaid shell bra is part of the accessories with this mermaid costume
- Mermaid doll
