Medieval Times Feast at Home Dinner Party Ideas

A medieval times feast is the perfect theme for a dinner party! I mean what's not to love? You get to dress up and eat with your hands! We hosted this medieval dinner party to celebrate my son's baptism with an “Armor of God” theme. With just my little family this intimate event was one we will always remember. The perfect medieval feast for kids!

Welcome to the Middle Ages

A dashing knight greeted guests upon arrival and ushered them into the dining room for our Medieval times feast!

Medieval Dinner Table

We were the knights of the rectangle table! A table fit for a king starting with a faux fur and chainmail table runner over the wood table. Then accented with pieces of armor, pewter dishes, feathers, antlers, and a bountiful harvest.

And don't forget to incorporate some decor on the light fixture for a total transformation. Some faux eucalyptus, dried apples, antler picks, and a well placed pear worked very nicely.

Medieval Table Centerpiece

Your centerpiece is the heart of the table scape and gives you the opportunity to really play up your theme. So if you're planning on doing anything medieval in the future, I suggest you start collecting armor if you don't already have some!

The helmet, shield, and sword make for the perfect centerpiece. I purchased these for my son's Armor of God photoshoot but had an extra shield {from my Wonder Woman birthday party}, breastplate, and a few gauntlets on hand.

Cause who doesn't need a few extra gauntlets? 😂

Apparently I do, because I also used them atop a huge birch candle with a few more painted bottle vases. And don't you love when the paper plate actually becomes decor!? A little tape and an extra appetizer plate becomes the focal point of the serving hutch.

Medieval Inspired Details

Once your main features are in place choose some additional details to really give a middle ages vibe. I chose feathered balls, furry picks, pinecones, lanterns, and more antlers. Most of which I already owned for our Woodland Christmas Decor.

My favorite tip is to ALWAYS shop your house first before purchasing anything new. Looking at your possessions with a fresh perspective can be enlightening. You'll be amazed at how many things you can repurpose.

Another great tip is to use your food as decor. I love the opulent look of overflowing fruit bowls and the chocolate gold coins.

Medieval Knight Place Setting

Your place settings are also very important. Make sure each guest has what they need. Then layer and add in a few totally unnecessary items for depth and interest! 🤣

Mixing real pewter dishes with themed paper plates and napkins made it fun for the whole family. The shield plates worked for our appetizers, we then ate off pewter for dinner, and used the paper plate for dessert. I've been collecting pewter pieces since I was 16 and absolutely love my collection!

The little porringer cups normally used for soups and stews held water for rinsing our fingers. And of course the large glass steins were perfect for our sparkling cider “mead”. Can you believe these are from Dollar Tree!? They are made with thick heavy glass and I highly recommend them!

Another favorite item are these jeweled napkin rings recommended to me by my friend Holly at Legally Crafty when she hosted a Game of Thrones watch party. Aren't they just SO perfect!? They arrived JUST in time for dinner and I'm so happy they did.

Medieval Times Feast Menu

• Cheese, olive, honeycomb appetizers
• Deviled Dragon Eyes
• Smoked Turkey Legs
• Roasted root vegetables
• Mini Soda Bread Loaves
• Whole Fruit towers with nuts and chocolate coins
• Sparkling Cider “Mead”
• Dutch Oven Peach Cobbler {we did need spoons for this one!}

For Starters, Not So Medieval

We didn't go historically accurate on everything but it sure was fun! Create a delicious cheese tray for starters then add olives, nuts, dates, and honeycomb. No one will complain, I promise!

Eat With Your Hands

The smoked turkey legs are an absolute MUST have. I also considered Cornish game hens for a minute but these were way easier to eat. Although I did end up adding a single fork to each place just in case but I can proudly say that no one used them!

My kids were in HEAVEN.

Just make sure you wash hands VERY well before and after! I had the little water bowls on the table but it's a great idea to keep a few wet wipes handy to clean up between courses.

Roasted Root Vegetables

Roasting root veggies takes a commitment but it's SO worth it. They are soft and delicious with a slight crunch if you add some oil or butter to the pan. Each root has a slightly different baking requirement so put them on in shifts so you end up with a perfectly roasted side dish.

I recommend a combination of:

• White potatoes
• Sweet potatoes
• Beets
• Carrots
• Turnips – if your family will eat them, mine won't

Breaking Bread

Baking up mini loaves of soda bread is another fun idea. We passed them around a broke off large chunks for each person. Bread is also really helpful {practically necessary} for scooping up food when refraining from flatware.

I love this easy bread recipe. No yeast, no punching, no extra kneading required. Just mix it up and bake it. Totally my kind of low maintenance bread making.

Knights and Dragon Eyes

Another super easy side dish are deviled eggs and my family LOVES them. I snagged the idea from Chow Bella Paleo to turn them into dragon eyes. Because what self respecting medieval knight hasn't done battle with a dragon?

Medieval Dessert

Once finished with dinner use your fruit display as a simple dessert. No cutting or peeling is super handy and everyone loved the fresh produce.

But it also doesn't hurt to have a few sweets on hand and these Chessmen shortbread cookies are perfect for your little knights.

Medieval Times Feast For Any Occasion

Now that we've hosted a Medieval times feast at home my family has already requested another one! This dinner party idea is a great theme with lots of options, so don't think you need a special occasion. But this particular event was very special for us to celebrate my son's baptism.
