Luna Lovegood Harry Potter Costume DIY
A Luna Lovegood Harry Potter Costume is such a fun idea for Halloween or any costume party. Luna is a quirky Ravenclaw most find extremely odd but she proves to be an excellent friend to Harry in the 5th Book – Order of the Phoenix, in which Luna is in her 4th year.
Because of Luna's eccentric style she's become a favorite among the costume set. You can go with her muggle attire in the pink jacket and leggings or more of a hybrid look with a colorful outfit under her Ravenclaw school robes.
Since the Harry Potter costumes have been so popular we've got a whole series devoted to our favorite characters:
- Part 1: Classic Harry Potter Character Costumes
- Part 2: Harry Potter Character Costumes with Supporting Roles – Luna makes this list!
- PART 3 – Creative Harry Potter Costumes for true Potter Fans

Luna Lovegood in Muggle Clothing
Instead of buying a costume that'll only be worn a couple of times, why not use the money to get something cute you can wear after Halloween is over?
- Cropped Pink Denim Jacket or Pink Trench Pea Coat
- Unicorn and rainbow skirt
- Blue leggings for WOMEN or Blue leggings for GIRLS
- Colorful Leg Warmers
Luna Lovegood in Hogwarts Robes – Harry Potter
Or you can go the hybrid route. My daughter adores Luna and was so excited to recreate her look, but also wanted to play of the Ravenclaw house spirit. Here's what you definitely need:
My daughter has red hair so we needed to get a Long blonde wig. If you're already working with natural long blonde tresses, I'm a little jealous, but you're all set!
Luna's clothes just need to be bold and brightly colored. Scour the thrift store and see what you can find. This dress {above} was perfect. It's got a big print, color blocked, has huge fake buttons, and totally seemed like something Luna would love. Don't stress about it. If you're in a pinch grab anything with unicorns and rainbows.
Layer this newly acquired outfit with a Hogwarts Ravenclaw Robe – just in case there's any question as to house loyalty and grab a copy of Luna's Wand – which incidentally – is shaped like a tulip and I find to be really cool. Or you can make your own with an easy wand tutorial that's coming soon!
Luna's Signature Accessories
Luna has a few signature accessories like always reading the Quibbler {her father's magazine} and strangely enough is caught reading it upside down! She'll also want to be wearing a set of Spectrespecs to catch any hidden messages in the text.
We printed out a copy of the Quibbler that is AMAZING and as of now, a free download! You'll need to do some work to put it together but I think it's totally worth it. Since my daughter wears glasses already, we printed out a copy of a spectrespec template and taped it to her glasses. But if your eye sight is good, you can grab a pair of fun bright glasses to don for the evening.
DIY Butterbeer Cork Necklace
The final accessories are a “butterbeer” cork necklace. My daughter created one using craft corks and beading cord. It is difficult getting the needle through the cork however so please use caution.
Luna Lovegood DIY Radish Earrings
And the iconic radish earrings. While the beaded ones from the films are darling, we opted for a simple route with shrinky dink paper and paint. Or bag the whole thing and grab a set of ready-made Radish Earrings. No shame in that!
DIY Radish Earring Supplies:
- Clear Shrinky Dink Paper
- Radish Image – free Download HERE
- Green and White acrylic paint – This set is awesome with 24 colors and brushes, or grab a couple bottles at Michael's
- Paint brush – included in set
- Regular Size Hole Punch
- Black and Red Sharpies
- (2) Earring Hooks
- (2) Larger Jump rings 8mm or 10mm {depending on where you punch your circle}
Step 1: Print out your radish image. I made a copy at 30% size to make sure we liked the approximate size it would be once shrunk.
Step 2: Trace the large radish shape onto the SMOOTH side of your Shrinky Dink paper using Black Sharpie. Then cut and Punch holes near the top of the leaves.
** PLEASE PUNCH HOLES BEFORE PAINTING**
Step 3: Paint and Color Your Radish on the DULL Side
- Paint the lines on the leaves in a lighter green color. We mixed the white and green. Then let dry.
- Color the radish body in with the Red Sharpie careful not to go over the traced lines on the bottom.
- Once dry, paint the bottom point of the radish white. Let dry.
- Finish by painting in the rest of the leaves with the darker green.
Step 4: Bake and Shrink
**PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR HOLES ARE PUNCHED**
Our first round of earrings didn't get holes and it's nearly impossible to drill them after the fact without ruining the paint.
Once in the oven, don't worry as the radishes start to curl. It takes a little while for anything to happen then they start curling and moving around on the tray. Its pretty fun to watch, even through a dirty oven door window! 😜 But eventually they flatten out perfectly.
Step 5: Add Jump rings and Earring Hooks
Voila! You are all ready to go out on the town. Radishes never looked so good! Enjoy your evening as Luna Lovegood.
