Hunting Themed Birthday Party
A few years ago my parents both turned 60. That's a pretty big milestone which requires a celebration! I invited everyone and planned a family reunion weekend in Idaho near my family farm. Since we were headed for the hills a hunting party themed birthday was a perfect fit. It doesn't hurt that my father is an avid hunter and fan of Duck Dynasty!

Hunting Party Invitations
If you aren't familiar with the TV show Duck Dynasty, then the Uncle Si quote invites won't be so funny. But the important thing was for everyone to come in camouflage ready to have a great time! Invite no longer available from DBN Graphics, but there's a similar style at The Chambray Bunny.
Camo up
Some were extreme! Like my husband who donned actual duck hunting waders and a big Willie beard!
My sister-in-law kept it classy with the subtle pink. Love these girls and their coordinating camo!
It's Party Time!

The family all stayed at The Schoolhouse Inn, once an old school that now sleeps 18 people dormitory style with a huge kitchen and gymnasium, perfect for large gatherings. We greeted guests at the gym doors with this “It's a Party Jack” sign that coordinated with the invitations. A basket with kazoo favors will came in handy a little while later. The redneck warning made sure everyone knew what they were getting into!
Hunting Party Food
When you have an old gymnasium to work with, you do what you can! We used the chalkboard wall as the backdrop for two lovely woodland floral urns and chalk art. A couple of framed Duck Dynasty references and pennant banner completed the simple decor. I love Miss Kay's quote,”You're not a proper woman unless you've owned a goat or two” from I Should be Mopping the Floor.
Since we were all traveling, I ordered food from Dickey's BBQ and my cousin picked it up on her way Saturday afternoon. She had to drive an HOUR to get to us. There is nothing out here. NOTHING. But the food was perfect for a hunting party menu:
- Pulled Pork Sandwiches
- Roast Chicken
- Baked Beans
- Mac n Cheese
- Green Salad
My father doesn't love cake so instead we had PIES!
- Pumpkin Pie
- Berry Pie
- Pecan Pie
Uncle Si's “Sweet Tea”, which was really lemonade, in the dispenser with orange Solo cups embellished with Duck Dynasty stickers.
And labeled water bottles, special edition camouflage Mountain Dew, Sprite, and A&W rootbeer rounded out our redneck beverage assortment.
Hunting Party Table Decor

Keeping with a rustic hunting theme I used tarps, purchased on a great sale at Home Depot, for the table covers with a kraft paper runner. The tarps were a bit crinkly but everyone loved 'em and they came in handy after the party. I love the simple centerpieces of mason jars filled with birdseed and wetland foliage. Birch bark candles, deer antler sheds {deer lose their antlers every year and grow another set}, and little duck figures. The galvanized buckets held paper and pens for guests to share a story or thought about the birthday couple which I later compiled into a book. “Sting like a Butterfly” printable also from I Should be Mopping the Floor.
I also found a bunch of funny Robertson family quotes that I put together for framing. I have a whole collection of frames that come in handy ALL the time. If you haven't started, pick up a frame at 50% next time you're at Michaels. You can thank me later.
This Jase Robertson quote pretty much sums up the whole Robertson family! “When you don't know what you are doing, It's best to it quickly!”
Hunting Party Activities: Marshmallow Shooting Range
Using rolls of camo table covering I created two “shooting lanes” with targets low {for kids} and high {for adults}. My sweet hubs made three pvc marshmallow shooters using easy instructions from Instructables. With a basket of mini marshmallows, strict instructions for the kiddos not to EAT them all, and sanitizer wipes for the guns between users, we were all set up! My favorite piece? Probably this old tree pole, turned gun rack, from the farm.
To shoot simply place the mini marshmallow in the end and blow through the top. These babies really work! We shot mallows 10-15′ across the room!
Having a head to head competition made it all the more exciting! My mom beat me, but I let it slide since she was the birthday girl!
As a side note: I had a tough time finding a camouflage dress. So I purchased camo leggings and headband, then a pink camo top from Walmart and topped it off with a men's XXL workshirt that I turned into a dress by cutting off the sleeves and taking in the sides. It was really easy and lots of fun!
Duck Calling Contest
Our next event was a duck calling contest. We passed out the kazoo favors and each person had an opportunity to give it their best quack.
It was hilarious. Kazoos do NOT make very good duck calls but they do make a fun party favor and silly activity!
The kids even decided to put on a little kazoo concert. It was darling. Then the kazoos all got put away! {wink}
Hunting Photo Booth
We kept the photo booth pretty simple with camo backdrop and table cover. I made the Duck Commander sign which is the actual company that sells the duck calls and hunting equipment from Duck Dynasty. More antlers and birch bark vases with beautiful “weeds” we picked from the local river marsh. I loved the shotgun shell garland I made from duct taped toilet paper tubes! Time consuming but really fun.
We even got a family photo with everyone looking at the camera! What do you think? I'm feeling next year's Christmas card! We provided beards, camo face paint, and camouflage bandanas for a quick redneck alter ego. I look pretty good in a beard, don't you think!?
Family Time

Everyone had a great time. We brought together extended family and many local friends to celebrate two really special people. My parents. The food and activities were good but my parents both agree that grandchildren are the BEST! Even though the Duck Dynasty is over, a hunting party is always in style and I hope you found some great ideas!
