Harry Potter Feast – Great Hall Decorations
First you've got to set the stage and what better way than creating a brick or stone “castle” backdrop in your home. Hang the Hogwarts flag and add some pumpkins, spider webs, and other spooky decor for a Halloween vibe.
Get the look:
- White brick backdrop {I LOVE this fabric backdrop and use it for everything!}
- Heavy duty Backdrop stands or I recommend this lighter version if you won't be using it that often
- Spider web mantel scarf
- Hogwarts Flag {come in set with all 4 house flags as well}
- Creepy cloth in black and white cheesecloth to drape sides
The set up “house” tables for your guests. If you've got a small number of guests, divide your table into house sections like this one. You can get all the details on this Harry Potter Party Table in a separate post here.
Harry Potter Hogwarts Feast Menu
There are SO many dishes listed in the books during the famous feasts at Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry. Where do we even begin? I'll start with the staples and we can work from there:
Hogwarts Feast Menu:
- Roast Chicken
- Roast Beef
- Pork Chops
- Lamb Chops
- Steak and Kidney Pie
- Boiled, Baked, Fried, or Mashed potatoes
- Sausages
- Yorkshire Pudding with Gravy
- Peas & Carrots
- Corn on the Cob {from the films}
**WARNING**
This is not a light menu, in fact it's the definition of a heavy meal – so pick and choose what makes sense for your guest list. Don't try to do it all unless you're expecting 100 people.
Harry Potter Feast Dinner
I don't know about you but I do NOT have kitchen of house elves to prepare all this amazing food. And even if I did – how could we possibly eat it all? So we pared the menu down to the basics and here's what we ended up with:
- Roasted chicken: This can be as simple as a rotisserie chicken or two, or bake your own in a roasting pan
- Chicken Pot Pies: In lieu of steak and kidney pies which no one in my family wanted to eat. Costco sells boxes of (8) Marie Callender frozen pot pies.
- Yorkshire Pudding: These are actually quite simple to make and I recommend preparing them in mini muffin tins and making several smaller batches as they are best served hot out of the oven.
- Chicken Gravy: You can make gravy from the roast chicken or stir up some from a mix. No one is going to complain either way. Serve the gravy with the Yorkshire pudding, potatoes, and have some extra for the chicken.
- Potatoes: There are potatoes served every conceivable way on the menu, so pick your poison. My family opted for mashed red potatoes with the skin on. Whip them up with a little greek yogurt and they are creamy and delicious!
- Roasted Carrots: these didn't make the photo, but you can use frozen veggies to steam or make a batch of fresh. We love a good roasted carrot with some cinnamon and light drizzle of honey.
FYI- This was still an incredible amount of food for 10 of us.
Hogwarts Feast Dessert Menu
The dessert list is just as long and decadent! Here's a list of the various desserts mentioned in the books:
- Ice cream
- Apple pies
- Trifle
- Rice pudding
- Strawberries
- Sticky Toffee Pudding
- Pumpkin Pasties – Parties With A Cause recipe
- Chocolate gateau
- Treacle Tart
- Hagrid's Rock Cakes
- And a whole host of candies from the Treats Trolley – check out what our trolley witch added for our party HERE. And wacth out for the the Weasleys' Wizard Weazes Skivving Snackbox joke sweets as well!
I tried making treacle tart but it's just too sweet for us. I prefer a modified lemon bar recipe with a crumble top instead. That didn't make out official menu but we've made them other times for Harry Potter movie nights. I'll have to add a recipe soon.
Harry Potter Dessert Favorites
When there's such an amazing selection of desserts to choose from you've got to serve bites and shooters so everyone has a chance to sample a few. Here are the treats we selected for our Harry Potter Feast:
- Apple Pie Tarts: these 3 bite beauties are the perfect answer to apple pie for a crowd. I picked these up at Trader Joe's in the frozen dessert section.
Gryffindor Trifle
Trifles are light layered desserts and easy to make as shooters. Start with a nice dessert cup like these and get layering.
- Angel food cake cubes for a lighter option or pound cake for a legit trifle
- Vanilla pudding, custard, or mousse – you can play up the gold color with food dye if you want to
- Add diced strawberries and raspberries, berry pie filling also works but is really sweet
- Then layer it all again
- Top with a little whipped cream and fresh raspberry if desired
A Nod to Chocolate Gateau
Okay so the chocolate gateau is a fancy french cake served in Book 4 Goblet of Fire during the Tri-Wizard tournament in honor of Beauxbatons, the French witches school. As nod to this lovely confection we chose molten chocolate lava cakes, also from Trader Joe's in the frozen dessert section, and served them up with a little scoop of Vanilla Bean ice cream.
Now I'll say here that I much prefer a homemade chocolate lava cake but when you've got this many kinds of food coming together it's tough to pull off on your own. So unless you've got help, there's absolutely NO shame in purchasing much of your dinner. Plus, these are pretty dang good for a frozen dessert.
Pumpkin Pasties
The pumpkin pasties are the one thing I do insist on making myself, well with a pre-made pie crust. 😜 They are so easy and can be made ahead of time, which is why this works. You can get my tips and tricks with the full Harry Potter Pumpkin Pasty recipe HERE.
Enjoy Your Harry Potter Feast
Serve it all up on these cool cauldron plates {and similar} and wash it down with some frosty butterbeer or enjoy a mug of hot butterbeer after dinner with this yummy recipe here.
I hope you have as much fun hosting a Harry Potter Feast with this Hogwarts Menu as I did! And now that I've done it once, I'd like to try it again with other dishes.
