Halloween charcuterie boards are the perfect thing for your next Halloween party! This witch themed fruit and cheese platter has all spooky but none of the guilt. A healthy and delicious alternative to candy boards. Turn your next Halloween snack board into a “Midnight Moon” tray of delights with the following fun foods….

It's Day 2 of our 13 Days of Halloween. Every year I try to come up with fun ideas that surround a general theme. This year we're doing Frankenstein and sharing all things Mad Science and spooky greens but we needed a little bit of witchy fun added to the mix! If you missed yesterday's post it's here: Day 1Halloween Snack Mix for Frankenstein Fans

Halloween Charcuterie Ingredients

Purple foods perfect for Halloween themed charcuterie board

When selecting foods for your “Midnight moon” witch themed Halloween charcuterie board you'll want to stick with a PURPLE {dark} color scheme. That'll help you decide which items to grab from the store. Since not all foods are perfectly purple have some flexibility with dark breads and meats.

Here's a list of my favorite items to use for a spooky witch themed snack board:

Purple Foods:

  • “Witch Finger” grapes – are actually called tear drop grapes
  • Purple yogurt covered pretzels
  • Blueberry stilton cheese
  • Blueberry Chevre – goat cheese
  • Blueberries
  • Blackberries
  • Purple fruit snacks
  • Dark fig & thyme crackers
  • Fig jam

Spooky supporting foods:

  • Ghost shaped Veggie Chips – only white ones
  • Small round of Brie cheese
  • Moon and star cut from a slice of cheddar
  • Fresh figs
  • Freeze dried apples
  • Rambutan fruit with half the peel removed
  • Passion fruit cut in half
  • Bowl of nuts
  • Pumpkin cream candies

Create Your Fruity Witch Hat

Step 1: Using blueberries outline the shape of a witch hat. Making sure to curve it at the top. Using blueberries create a bottom band, then leave a space for a hat band and add another blackberries for an upper band.

Step 2: After completing the outline and your lower band, fill in the triangle portion with alternating lines of blueberries and blackberries.

Step 3: Now go back in and fill out your hat with a second layer of blueberries to make it nice and full. Using your freeze dried apples create your hat band and you've finished your fruity witch hat! If you've chosen another accent color feel free to switch up the color of the hat band.

Now that your witch hat is finished you can begin filling in the rest of the tray with more yummy spooky snacks. The Tear drop “Witch Finger” grapes make excellent ends. You'll want to keep lighter colored items next to the witch hat to help it stand out and be clearly visible.

The round of Brie Cheese looks like a full moon, when most witchy shenanigans are bound to happen! But to add a little interest it's fun to layer the Brie with a cheddar crescent moon created by using a round cookie cutter on a slice of cheese. Cut out the full circle, then bring the cutter towards the middle to create a crescent shape and place on Brie. Add a tiny star for the full effect. {see below}

  • Circle cookie cutter
  • Star cookie cutters
  • Large white ceramic tray

When your moon made of cheese is complete, slice your rambutans around the centers and pop off the top. They feel a little creepy, and look even creepier…..which is totally the point! The fruit is delicious though and tastes like a large peeled grape. Just watch the seed in the center.

I love these fruits for Halloween trays because you can make them look like eyeballs, brains, or slimy eggs. Even the hairy outside of the whole fruits is a fun addition.

Halloween Cheese Board Ideas

After you've got your fruits all selected and laid out, you'll want to add the rest of your cheese and crackers. Since this is a smaller tray devoted to fruits and sweeter cheeses we've only got the 3 cheese offerings:

  • Blueberry Stilton – most grocery stores will carry this
  • Blueberry Vanilla Chevre – Goat cheese from Trader Joe's {but you can find it other places as well}
  • Fig and Thyme crackers {Trader Joes}

With a larger table spread, or multiple trays you can include other fun savory cheeses as well like:

  • “Moldy” blue cheeses with large blue veining
  • Look for purple wine flavored cheeses or ones with a purple rind
  • Black rind cheese, or a “Barely Buzzed” Coffee coated cheddar by Beehive Cheese Company
  • Even a green gouda is available sometimes or some with a green rind like Irish cheddars
  • See a full list with photos of great Halloween meats and cheeses in a post coming soon….

We haven't talked about the passion fruit and figs yet. They are both such yummy, beautiful, and strange fruits that I love to use at Halloween. The insides have weird textures.

Passion fruit: The passion fruit is quite tart and I recommend putting the slimy seeds on ice cream if you aren't sure you'd like it on a cracker.

Figs: Fresh figs have a green and purple outside skin with a fun shape and sweet flesh. There are lots of seeds in this one too and they make for a perfect compliment to cracker and brie. Not as sweet as the dried version, fresh are my favorite. But fried figs look like something out of an apothecary shop and perfect for the witchy potion.

The sprinkle a few purple fruit snacks around the plate and garnish with a couple plastic spiders for good measure!

If your tray gets full and you've still go some fun things to serve, toss them in cauldron bowls for a fun little accent to the overall witch theme. I added:

  • Roasted nuts
  • Fig jam
  • Pumpkin cream candies

You can pick up some small cauldron bowls here and then use them for soup {especially French Onion} year round.

Enjoy Your Halloween Charcuterie!

Now you can get really witchy by adding some fun decor to your table. The black broom stick, witch hat clock, and cauldron of purple carnations make a fun and simple “Midnight Moon” charcuterie board magical for Halloween! Go through your Halloween decor and see if you've got some fun witchy items to add. If not, a trip to Hobby Lobby or Michaels might be in order!
