Top Party Trends for 2017… Color Party Trend #3
Every year we look ahead to what is new. This year I break down the four top party trends for 2017. Several existing trends are being built on and continue into the New Year, while a few old ideas are making a comeback with updated appeal. And we see a few classic themes re-imagined with fresh new graphic appeal. This color party trend of high contrast and rainbows makes for a lot of fun.
- Trend 1: Nature continues its allure
- Trend 2: Pattern creates a stunning “no theme” design
- Trend 3: Color sets the stage for fabulous fun
- Trend 4: Our small world gets big
Trend 3 – Color sets the stage for fabulous fun!
Color is one of those things that people either love or hate. They embrace it or fear it. Use it wisely or very wrong! Using a single color for a party theme can create drama. While combining color harmonies can create a cohesive feeling. I'm noticing a color party trend of all or nothing this year. Let's take a look at rainbow designs, and high contrast black and white parties.
Rainbow Colors
Rainbows often follow unicorns, artists, ponies, and leprechauns, and we’ll be following along to see how long they stay hot.
Rainbow Party theme:
This is such a simple yet striking party theme. Versatile enough to be used for lots of different occasions: birthday parties, baby sprinkles, religious celebrations, and a certain March holiday!
I'm not sure I have the patience for these rainbow cupcakes but they sure are cute!
This sweet tulle rainbow backdrop is a quick and easy rainbow party solution.
Rainbow kabobs are always a good idea! No matter the theme. You can also try it with vegetables and trick the kiddos into eating more!
Unicorn Party Theme:
I'll admit that I love unicorns. They are beautiful, magical, and functional. What could be better? {My son says if they breathed fire they would be better.} Ok. I'll give him that one. This is wonderful theme when you want to go fancy and mystical without being “princess”.
Colorful ribbons on these unicorn wands are a great addition to the party. Who doesn't want to be a unicorn?

No unicorn party is complete without a colorful unicorn horn headband for each guest.

Art Party Theme:
As a color consultant and interior designer I'm partial to this one. I haven't painted in years but someday when when kids are a little older I'll pull out the dusty palette and get to work. Until then, I can celebrate creativity with my children. Heck, I'm not sure I even need a birthday to do this one!
This Party Like Picasso birthday was a hit! So much creative fun.
I've been dying to create some Melted Crayon Art for a long time. I think this would be the perfect art party backdrop on my mantel. When I give it a try, I'll let you know.

Pony Party Theme:
My Little Ponies were big when I was a little girl so this theme brings a sense of nostalgia. I prefer the simple ponies from my day rather that the “sexy” ones they make now. {Can ponies be sexy?} You know what I mean. Most toys these days are UGH! Over the top.
Rainbow fans create a wonderful backdrop to this cute pony inspired table. The fondant heart cake is a nice touch and wouldn't be tough to make with a good fondant recipe and the right size cookie cutters.
St. Patrick's Day Party Theme:
I love holidays! They give me an excuse to party all the time. St. Patrick's Day is a special one as it was also my dear Grandfathers' birthday. He used to joke that all of Ireland celebrated his birth. Whether you go in for leprechauns and pots of gold at the end of the rainbow or keep it simple with a little green food, St. Patrick's Day has the potential for lots of fun.
I love this streamer rainbow backdrop for this fun green spread. You can find the tutorial here.
Want to “taste the rainbow”? I'm not a huge candy fan but you can even convince to ME to make a Skittles rainbow dessert. Just don't forget the pot of Rolo “gold” at the the end.

High Contrast Black and White Party Theme
The high contrast “no color” party. Black and white color schemes are becoming more and more popular. They are classic and make it easy to pull pieces together that fit the theme.
You can keep it a strict achromatic palette using no color at all…
…or add a splash. The red balloons here are made all the more dramatic because of the black and white background. Don't you love the striped balloons?
And here we have a beautiful Kate Spade party in black and white accented with gold. Black and white makes for a very sophisticated soiree. But can also be played down.
I bet you weren't expecting that! This Modern Batman Party breaks tradition and I love it for that!
