What is a Gender Reveal Party?
The first gender reveal video was released on Youtube in 2008 and the practice has gone gangbusters since then. In case you’re not aware of the ever-growing trend, the idea is to invite your friends and family for a big announcement on the sex of your baby. Oft times the outcome is as much a surprise to the parents-to-be as the rest of the guests.
How does this work?!
Typically the ultrasound tech writes down the determination, sealing it in an envelope that is delivered to a bakery for a cake, cupcakes, or cookies with pink or blue inside. The envelope can also be taken to a florist who will fill a box with helium balloons of the appropriate color. I never had a gender reveal party. The control freak in me would never allow such suspense! I had to know what I was having as soon as possible {As in we went to Fetal Foto at 14 weeks} so I could start designing the nursery. Being a pregnant interior designer has its pitfalls! So I might get on board this gender announcement party thing if I was in the know and we just surprised our family.
Blue and Pink, makes me think…there might be other options!
There's something I don't love about the gender reveal trend. The major theme of the gender reveal is a color announcement of pink or blue. And it kind of bugs me. Does it bother anyone else?
I know that pink and blue have been strong gender identifiers for decades but did you know that it wasn’t until 1940 that retailers {yes, department store executives} decided that pink would be marketed for girls and blue for boys. Prior to that, clothing companies across the country had differing baby color palettes. Today in Belgium blue is still used for baby girls and pink for baby boys. Does that seem weird? Maybe a little. To those of us born after 1940 {basically anyone reading a blog!}, that’s how it’s always been. But I’m not a huge fan of the social color assignments.
Boys can like pink and girls can like blue without judgement, and we can all like green or purple or red! I think it’d work just fine to go with something completely different if you had the right color combination.
As I started looking for gender reveal party theme ideas I found they ran the gamut from overly sophisticated to downright tacky {ie: “I'm here for the sex”}. I'm all about classy party ideas so for today, I've rounded up a collection of the SEVEN best classy gender reveal party themes. But there are only a couple of themes that try to buck the pink/blue color convention, see what you think:
1. Twinkle twinkle little star
I love this children's song lyric as a baby shower or gender reveal theme. I also love it as a nursery theme. Definitely a classic with so many sweet little details that also works wonderfully with my favorite book quote from Guess How Much I Love You, “Love you to the moon and back”. This theme would work well in soft yellows and blues.
2. Little Mister or Little Sister?
This is a simple and logical theme that is quite polite. I also like the Little Mister or Little Miss version of this theme. Classy party options are wide open. One family used giraffes with bowties and hair bows as their graphic decor. Be creative and make it personal.
3. Prince or Princess?
Prince or Princess gender reveal party? This is a theme for a more sophisticated affair. I love this idea for a baby shower but if you want to go all out on your gender reveal then this is a great theme for you!
4. Team Lashes or Team Staches?
Use pins, mustaches or eyelashes on sticks {Think photo booth props}, or even mustache tattoos and false lashes for guests! This theme makes for GREAT photo ops!
5. What will it BEE?
We've all seen cheesy bee themed parties for kids. This theme has so much more to offer with the clean hexagon of the beehive to the minimalist yellow and black color scheme. I love the contemporary style they used to make these “What will it BEE?” gender reveal parties amazing. I also like that the colors are neutral!
6. Blue or Pink, what do you think?
Pink or blue, we love you! With people voting on what they think the baby will be it feels like someone might be disappointed when the gender is announced. I hate the thought of any baby not being 100% adored so I like this reminder that no matter what you are: “Baby, you are loved!”
7. Little He or little She?
Using twin boy/girl baby shower or birthday party themes is a fabulous idea for gender reveal parties. There are so many great twin options out there to tweak and make your gender reveal party fun and unique.
What about these color alternatives:
We've gotten through all seven. How do you feel? I hope inspired and excited for your party. Are you set on pink and blue or have I encouraged you to try something new? “Be BRAVE, be BOLD, be DIFFERENT!” I came up with my own little list of color alternatives….what do you think?
Greige or brown, what’s coming down?
Teal or navy, what is this baby?
Yellow or green, what will be seen?
{Yikes! Someone please stop me!}
Ok. So maybe Hallmark won't be knocking on my door anytime soon for my sweet rhymes, but there ARE other options for colors than the tried and true. There's something really special about knowing the sex of your baby. It helped me bond with that little kicker inside me.
I know there are people who choose not to find out, and there's something to be said about that surprise. I just know waiting's not for me! If you plan to find out and want to celebrate, I hope this round up of classy gender reveal party themes helps you narrow it down.
